REACHING OUT TO NISHNAWBE ASKI NATION GIRLS!
Girl Power is an initiative of the Decade for Youth and Development
program at NAN. It's all about helping young women make a
difference in their communities. As of April 2005 we are awaiting
a decision by the Ontario Women's Directorate to fund this
program. With approved funding NAN will hire a trainer and develop
resource manuals for trainers, as well as workbooks for young
girls!
Girls are at risk for different kinds of abuse and trauma. Our
programming and resources are designed to help girls develop the
skills and knowledge necessary to avoid risky and dangerous
behavior. This section of our home page is full of tools and
information to help young women create girl-friendly communities.
We hope you find the materials useful and informative.

Girl Power in Webequie!!!
On August 19th and 20th, 2004 Girl Power workshops were held in
Webequie First Nation. Young ladies aged 15-18 participated in
games and presentations as part of Webequie's Residential School
Conference. Melanie Goodchild and Catherine Cheechoo were the Girl
Power Trainers for this session.
The topics covered during Girl Power included making healthy
choices, values, self-esteem, and healthy relationships.
A total of ten girls attended over the two days, and all had a
blast! Thanks to Esther Jacob, Lori Troutlake, Christine Whitehead,
Lorinda Troutlake, and Belinda Wabasse for participating for the
full two days! The girls have requested for another Girl Power
Training during the school year and the trainers also hope to go
back to Webequie! Keep checking back as we will be adding pictures
of the participants in action at a later date.
