NAN Girl Power Training a Success! Participants in the first ever NAN sponsored Girl Power Train the Trainers symposiusm. The theme of this training was prevention of violence against women through leadership development. Participants learned how to become proactive in breaking the cycle of young women's oppression. The training session was held on the campus of Lakehead University on May 18-21. Over 24 young women learned about how to speak up against social injustice and how to encourage other young women to do the same by organizing a Girl Power camp in their home community. Learn more about this event by clicking here. The Girl Power Train the Trainers symposium was a tremendous success. A total of 24 young women from across NAN were brought together on May 18-21 for three informative and fun-filled days of learning. The agenda included a wide variety of hands-on workshops encouraging the participants to increase their knowledge and skills in the area of girl empowerment. These trainers will return to their home communities and explore options for setting up Girl Power camps or programs for girls ages 9-14 as a way to prevent violence against women. Empowerment is about raising the self-esteem of young women and introducing them to social justice issues at the community level. You can see a copy of the training agenda here Special thanks goes out to our symposium sponsors: the Ontario Women's Directorate and the World Primate Relief Development Fund. Their generous support made this event a reality and we are grateful! See our Photo Gallery here. We've drafted a conference proceedings document for all to review
