The NAN Decade Youth Council hosted the first ever
Self-Governance Symposium for Youth on
March 25 & 26, 2004 at the Valhalla Inn in
Thunder Bay. The two-day event featured workshops, guest speakers
and presentations on issues relating to Nation building and
governance. Funding for this event was provided by Indian and
Northern Affairs Canada.

Symposium delegates introduce themselves.
The symposium brought together delegates from across NAN to
learn about the principles of self-governance in NAN territory.
Several guest speakers addressed the youth and spoke of the
importance of Nation building based upon traditional concepts of
governance and leadership.

NAN founder, Andrew Rickard Sr.
Mr. Andrew Rickard spoke to the youth about First Law and the
importance of self-governance being founded in First Nation
cultural teachings and values.

Another important guest during the symposium, the NAN Polar
Bear mascot making a special appearance on the last day
