Cultural Teachings

NAN Decade

Girl Power aims to instil high self-esteem into each participant. One important aspect for our girls to feel good about themself is to feel proud of their culture. Incorporating aspects of cultural teachings can lead to many fun and interesting activities.

Examples of cultural activities includes:

  • Teachings on the seven teachings, cermonies, moontime, clan systems, powwows, the types of dances at powwows, dreamcatchers, and any teachings that may be specific to your community.
  • Going on a nature walk to collect medicines and to learn the use of these medicines
  • Making dreamcatchers, drums or medicine wheels, and learning about the teaching of these items
  • Having an individual come in for legends and storytelling
  • Learning to prepare traditional foods in teepees

The list can go on and on, the idea is to be creative and mindful of what the girls would like to learn about. A good idea is to have people from your community who are knowledgeable in these areas to facillitate these activities. This person may be an elder parent, teacher or another youth.

The Seven Teachings

Honesty - To achieve honesty within yourself, to recognize who and what you are. Do this and you can be honest with all others.

Humility- Humble yourself and recognize that no matter how much you think you know , you know very little of the universe.

Truth- To learn truth, to live with truth and to walk with truth, to speak truth.

Wisdom- To have wisdom is to know the difference between good and bad and to know the result of your actions.

Love- Unconditional love to know that when people are weak they need your love the most, that your love is given freely and you cannot put conditions on it or your love is not true.

Respect- Respect others beliefs and yourself. If you cannot show resepct you cannot expect to respect to be given.

Bravery- To be brave is to do something right even if you know it is going to hurt you.
