"We the young people of Nishnawbe Aski Nation, recognize and
applaud the efforts made by NAN in adopting a positive youth
development approach through Resolution 00/17. We note with great
sadness that we have lost over 240 young lives to suicide in the
past 15 years. The declaration of this Decade is an awesome first
step in addressing this important issue. The time for action is
now!"
Based upon input from youth at a Suicide Prevention Conference
in January 2000 the NAN Chiefs strengthened their commitment to
young people by adopting a youth development approach through
Resolution 00/17, which calls for the years 2001-2010 to be the NAN
Decade for Youht & Development. This declaration seeks to
address more effectively the problems of young men and women and to
increase the opportunities for their participation in NAN
communities. Young people are a major force in the contemporary
world. Within NAN territory, over 68% of the population is under
the age of 29. These young people are at the forefront of social,
political, cultural and economic developments. The Decade for Youth
& Development office has created this website to keep NAN our
young people informed of activities and resources for positive
youth development.
